DE&I (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion)

AAUW Fort Atkinson branch is working to incorporate the AAUW National DE&I Toolkit into branch meetings and newsletters.  We celebrate diversity and are working toward more diversity and inclusion in our membership.

Here are some key terms and concepts that we will need to know:

Diversity: The condition of having or being composed of differing elements; variety, especially the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures, etc.) in a group or organization; programs intended to promote diversity.

Inclusion: The act of including; the state of being included. The act or practice of including and accommodating people who have historically been excluded.

Diversity vs. Inclusion: Diversity is what makes us different and unique. Inclusion entails behaviors and actions that make us feel welcomed.  As diversity advocate Verna Myers once said, “Diversity is being invited to the party, and inclusion is being asked to dance.”
